  • At the end of April for the countries in the Sudanian and Sahelian zones of West Africa
  • Weekly for intra-seasonal forecasts
  • Every ten days for hydrological forecasts

Seasonal forecasts provide the following information:

  • Rainfall totals
  • Season start dates
  • Season end dates
  • Duration of dry spells
  • Streamflows in river basins

At the end of their work, experts also announce the possible implications of the season's forecasts and make recommendations.

  • Stop or reduce greenhouse gas emissions

How can one access training courses at the AGRHYMET Center?

To access a training program at the AGRHYMET Center, the prospective student must:

  • Meet the required level:
    • Scientific Baccalaureate for Higher Technician training
    • Two years of post-secondary education (BAC +2) for an engineering cycle
    • Four years of post-secondary education (BAC +4) for a Master’s cycle
  • Submit their application file to the Center’s General Directorate at: administration.agrhymet@cilss.int
  • Be a scholarship recipient or have a source of funding

Seasonal forecasts are based on, among other things, the analysis of the current situation and probable developments of Sea Surface Temperatures (SST), forecasts from global climate centers, statistical analyses of data from National Meteorological and Hydrological Services (NMHSs), and expert knowledge of the climate characteristics in West Africa and the Sahel.

What is the population growth in West Africa?

West Africa currently has the second highest fertility rate in the world (5.2 children per woman), behind Central Africa (5.5 children per woman). It is expected to gradually decline to 3.3 children per woman by 2050, and to 2.2 by the end of the century.

What are the recommendations for seed varieties for the upcoming season?

The start of the season will be late and the end will come early, meaning the rainy season will be short. It is therefore recommended to plant short-cycle seed varieties.
